First Vela Satellites launched from Cape Canaveral

The first Vela Hotel Satellites were launched from Cape Canaveral on this date. The Vela, short for velador (Spanish for watchman,) were designed to detect and monitor nuclear explosions from anywhere on earth. The system was utilized after the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty signed by the U.S., Soviet Union and other nuclear-capable states.
