10/2 Today in Florida from the Florida Historical Society!

1885 - Florida’s first female representative in Congress, Ruth Bryan Owen, daughter of three-time unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President, William Jennings Bryan, was born in Illinois on this date. Mrs. Owen served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1929 until 1933 when she was defeated. It was suspected by some observers that her staunch opposition to the repeal of Prohibition was the primary reason for this loss. In 1933 Owen became America’s first female envoy, serving as ambassador to Denmark until 1936. After WWII Owen worked as a delegate to the San Francisco Conference which resulted in the creation of the United Nations Charter.
