William "Uncle Bill" Lundy dies on this date

Date in History:

01 Sep 1957

William “Uncle Bill” Lundy died at the purported age of 109 in Crestview, Okaloosa County on this date. Lundy claimed to be one of the last surviving Confederate veterans of the Civil War, and the last Civil War veteran in Florida. His claimed birthdate and place was January 18th, 1848 in Pike County Alabama. According to Lundy, he served with the 4th Alabama Calvary Regiment, joining at the age of 16 in 1865, just before the end of the war. However, based on census records, many believe that Lundy was actually born in 1860 and would have been 5 years old when the war ended. He was however granted a Confederate soldiers’ pension beginning in 1941, and was recognized at the time of his death as having served during the war. He is buried in the Almarante Cemetery in Laurel Hill, Okaloosa County.
