Just six days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced that the entire Cape Canaveral would be renamed Cape Kennedy. Both Kennedy and Johnson were supporters of manned space flight, specifically flights to the surface of the moon. Although the name change was adopted by the U.S. Board of Geological Surveys and the U.S. Department of the Interior, it was not popular in Florida as Cape Canaveral had been the name since the 16^th century. Due to this public pressure, name was officially changed back to Cape Canaveral in October of 1973.
