Date in History:
1845 – Joseph Branch became the first Attorney General for Florida on this date. Branch had worked as a lawyer in Tallahassee in the 1830s and early 1840s where he represented individuals and businesses such as the Southern Life Insurance Company. The office was originally created by the 1838 State Constitution and was elected by the state Legislature. In 1868 it became a popularly elected office, which it still is today. Branch ended his term as Attorney General on July 14th, 1846. Joseph Branch’s uncle John Branch served as the last territorial governor of Florida from August 11th, 1844 - June 25th, 1845.
