body-summary:
body-text:

“Speedy” Harrell was born on River Road in Rockledge to George Lewis and Chana Lee Collier Harrell on September 28, 1927, and has lived in Central Brevard County his entire life. He remembers a time before DDT was developed as an insecticide. He says that if you put your hand on a window screen on the shady side of a house, it took only a few seconds for the mosquitos to form a solid black mirror of your hand as they attempted to bite you through the wire mesh. Everyone had window screens, because there was no air conditioning.

Harrell graduated from Rockledge High School in 1945, with thirty-two classmates. He remembers using a “mosquito beater” to keep the blood suckers off of his mother as she put laundry on the line to dry, and to protect his brother as he milked a cow. Florida pioneers like the Harrell family would lash together palm fronds to create “mosquito beaters” to brush away swarms of the biting insects.

He led a full life and touche many with his stories and kindness.  Some highlights of his life:

  • George served in the Army in World War II, shortly after high school, earning an Army of Occupation medal and World War II Victory medal.
  •  Attended Stetson University in DeLand on a football scholarship
  • Creator and Founder of Mosquito Beaters. More than 4,000 on the past attendance list and it has grown every year for 34 years.
  • Created the Space Coast Post Card Collectors’ Club and the Florida Knife Collectors’ Club
  • Won many awards for his personal knife collection
  • Volunteered at the Florida Historical Library and was sought after by MANY for his knowledge of local history.
  • Written and published 4 books on Brevard County history
  • Coached his child's softball team to the USSSA World Series for three years.
  • Received the key to the City of Cocoa twice- almost 20 years apart
  • ...and so many numerous ways, to much to be listed he was a part of the community and is missed.

George Leland "Speedy" Harrell, 91, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2019 in Rockledge Florida and was laid to rest with military honors April 29th 2019 at Florida Memorial Gardens, 5950 US-1, Rockledge Florida.

body-summary:
body-text:

Rockledge - June G. Geiger of Rockledge passed away May 10, 2020. She was 89. June was born in southeast Missouri during the Great Depression, the fourth child of Harry and Mary Gettings. She moved with her family at the age of 12 to the Cocoa/Rockledge area, and her love affair with this area of Florida, where she would live the rest of her life, began. She excelled in many areas at Cocoa High-as a varsity basketball and softball player, trumpeter in the band, National Honor Society member, and president of the senior class. Her classmates also voted her "Most Popular", "Most Likely to Succeed", "Most Athletic", and "Best All Around" for the class of 1948. Shortly after high school, she married C.P. "Rinkey" Geiger, a fellow Cocoa High Tiger, and began her career as a legal secretary. Rinkey and June welcomed two daughters to the family - Leigh in 1953 and Dale in 1959.

June was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Cocoa. At the age of 20, she represented the state of Florida at the Southern Baptist Convention's National Young People's Union Speakers' Tournament, winning first place with her speech, "Choose You This Day", based on Joshua 24:15. June used her musical talents singing in the choir and directing various musical groups, and on occasion served by leading congregational singing. Her musical abilities were also showcased as a member of the Platinum Show Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, and as a member of the Indialantic Chamber Singers. June also taught Sunday School at FBC and served as a mentor to many young women.

As an adult, June channeled her athletic prowess as a softball coach. She coached numerous girls' teams in Rockledge, taking several to the state finals, but most importantly, encouraging young girls to compete to their potential, and inspiring them to be the best possible versions of themselves. (There were life-lessons in kicking dirt on umpires' shoes, for sure).

Because she so loved this area of Florida, June was a faithful, working member of "Mosquito Beaters", an organization which began in 1986 dedicated to preserving the history of central Brevard. She worked as a volunteer at the Florida Historical Society for several years and was a published author of the book The St. John's from the Marshlands to the Atlantic, along with her life-long friend, George Leland "Speedy" Harrell.

June will be remembered by all who knew her for her many passionate pursuits in life, her love of the beach, the smell of orange blossoms in the spring, singing the old hymns, the Atlanta Braves, the Florida Gators, bike riding and seashell collecting, and all good-natured competitions.

title: Dr. William Warren Rogers Jr.
firstname:
William Warren
lastname:
Rogers Jr.
body-summary:
body-text:

Affectionately known as Captain Midnight, he had a long relationship with Florida State University and was widely known in the community. Born on August 18, 1929 in Sandy Ridge, Alabama, he was the youngest of four children and was raised in Greenville, Alabama by his father (a Christian Church minister) and mother. As a boy, he demonstrated a love for reading, and was awarded an academic scholarship to attend Auburn University. He would never lose a deep affection for Auburn and avidly followed its sports teams.

It was at Auburn that he met his wife, Miriam Arnold, also raised in Alabama, and they married in 1951. Pursuing a Ph.D. in history, Bill attended the University of North Carolina, and received that degree, two years delayed by his service in the Army. After a single year at FSU’s program at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia, in 1960 he joined the history department on the main campus in Tallahassee.

That began what Dr. Rogers always described as a stroke of great fortune and the beginning of a richly rewarding career. He would be an integral part of the history department for the next 36 years. There, he taught a wide variety of courses in American history that ranged from the large freshman sessions (he liked to refer to them as the “Thundering Herd”) to seminars composed of a handful of graduate students. Professor Rogers was a truly gifted teacher and mentor. In 1961, he was awarded the highly prestigious Coyle Moore Award for outstanding teaching. Many in Tallahassee who were not FSU students also enjoyed Dr. Rogers. They took various night courses concerning Tallahassee’s past that Rogers recounted in colorful fashion.

In the meantime, he began to build a fine reputation as a scholar. He would author over two dozen books and some 80 articles in professional journals in a long and prolific writing career. Dr. Rogers wrote about the South. He devoted most of his efforts to Alabama, Florida and Georgia. His several volumes on Thomasville, Georgia helped make local history a respectable field for scholars. Among his most significant works is a study of “Populism in Alabama” and also serving as one of the authors of the widely respected “Alabama: The History of a Deep South State” (1994).

Dr. Rogers also found much in his backyard to address. He co-authored “Favored Land: A History of Tallahassee and Leon County,” “Outposts on the Gulf St. George Island and Apalachicola From Early exploration to World War II,” and “At the Water’s Edge – A Pictorial and Narrative History of Apalachicola and Franklin County.”

After he retired in 1996, he became the editor of Sentry Press where he worked with other prospective authors and published their books. During his tenure, the local press brought out some 40 books. Dr. Rogers’ position as editor suited him well. He improved what were often raw manuscripts, and by taking a generous and encouraging approach, he assured many first-time authors of the worth of their labor and book’s contribution.

Bill Rogers greatly enjoyed a long and wonderful life. He skillfully played tennis, and as a self-described Anglophile, he traveled widely, even leading tours of Europe and as far away as New Zealand. A natural warmth and infectious enthusiasm made him many admirers and friends. They and his family will miss him very much.

William Warren Rogers, a resident of Tallahassee for 57 years, passed away at his home on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.

He also teaches African writers and Shakespeare, even though he regards himself as an “outsider” in both areas.
