Letter from Panton Leslie & Co. to John Savage. Dated Pensacola, August 12, 1797. 3 sheets, folded. 10 p. of writing.

Describes P. & L.' sproblems in trading in Florida. Thanks Savage for his attention to the Panton, Leslie memeorial date May

2, 1794. Thinks that events in Europe have kept the minister from answering their requests. Treaty of friendship between the

U.S. and Spain will probably render the proposal invalid. Encouraged by government officials; they have continued to

undersell the American merchants. They have resigned the business into the King's hands. Carondolet still thinks the King

will compensate the company for losses. It was due to the company that the Indians remained peaceful.

the Marquis Montalet, who was seeking a plea to settle in Florida. Paper is in poor condition, split into four large and number

of smaller pieces. Loss of some text, but meaning is not seriously obscured. (transcript)

Letter from Richard Thomas, Clerk in the Indian Dept. South of Ohio, to James Burgess. Dated "Tuckalatchee," August 2,

1798. 1 sheet folded. 3 pages of writing. Contains a talk with "Mad Dog" which Burgess is requested to deliver to the chiefs

and Seminoles in his area. The talk deals with the need to preserve peace and keep the Indian lands from encroachmen,

especially by land speculators. (transcript)
