The Florida Public Archaeology Network's East Central Region offices are located at the headquarters of the Florida Historical Society, Cocoa.  We serve eight counties, including Brevard, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and St. Lucie.

The East Central Region offers a variety of archaeology events and educational opportunities free to the public.  Some of our events include:  the “In the Dirt” Lecture Series; K-12 classroom demonstrations; lectures for organizations and community groups; and artifact displays at public events.

Below you will find information about the entire Florida Public Archaeology Network and our mission.

About the Florida Public Archaeology Network

The Florida Legislature established The Florida Public Archaeology Network to be administered through the University of West Florida with the goal “to help stem the rapid deterioration of this state’s buried past and to expand public interest in archaeology.” The program has three components:

Public Outreach:

  • create visible public outreach programs (archaeological/heritage tourism)
  • form partnerships with other heritage organizations
  • provide information on archaeological sites and issues to the public
  • promote regional heritage events and programs
  • support and encourage archaeological volunteer opportunities

Assistance to Local Governments:

  • support local governments in the effort to preserve archaeological resources (ordinances, comprehensive plan elements, and preservation plans)
  • provide professional archaeological assistance with local archaeological emergencies
  • advise local governments on the management of municipal and county-owned sites

Assist the Division of Historical Resources:

  • promote Division programs (including grants)
  • provide venues and professional assistance for regional training opportunities
  • refer local inquiries to the appropriate Division office or staff member
  • distribute literature promulgated by the Division
  • help identify local archaeological sites for the National Register
